From Maillé to Luynes...

Only 15 kilometres from Tours, the imposing but beautiful figure of the Château de Luynes offers an exceptional view over the Loire Valley.

Built in the twelfth century, on a rocky promontory where it was able defend the crown of France, its intimidating city wall and impressive medieval towers have always provided a stirring sight in the Tours region.

It was not until the seventeenth century that it became a residence devoted to its owners' pleasure.

Many kings of France, Philip the Fair, Charles VII, Louis XI, Catherine de Medici, Charles IX and Louis XIII (three times) stayed here at one time or another, attracted to the particularly bounteous hunting.

The château was has eben continuously inhabited since it was first built, which explains its perfect state of preservation. Only three families have ever owned it - in order the lords of Maillé, the dukes of Laval and, since 1619, the descendants of the famous favourite of Louis XIII, the duke of Luynes.

Beyond a strong historical interest, the Château de Luynes offers all the charm of a family day out. Visit the furnished apartments inhabited by the thirteenth Duke of Luynes and his family.

Finish the tour passing through the surprising and delightful gardens, the castle moat and the Gothic chapel with its roof made from an upturned boat hull.
